Track and Field History (Through 2007)

The Charger women's track and field team became UAH's 13th sanctioned sport in 2001.

UAH Cross Country coach David Cain was given the task of getting the young program out of the blocks and rolling full steam ahead.

During it's inaugural season, the Lady Chargers did a fantastic job. For many on the team, track and field was a new experience. Most of the team was comprised of transplants from the cross country team, while others migrated over from other Charger programs.

Throughout the first season, the Lady Chargers learned a lot and even won a few events. Aytree Blalock paved the way for her teammates, claiming several top five finishes. She capped off the year by becoming UAH's first track athlete to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championships, qualifying in the 5,000 meter run.

In 2002, Amy Phillips followed Blalock into the history books by becoming the second runner to compete at the National Championships. She competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Phillips returned to the Nationals in 2003, again competing in the steeplechase.

The 2004 season saw Phillips return to the Nationals for a third time. This time, she was joined by another Lady Charger, as Easter Grant qualified in the 200 meter dash. The 2004 season also saw the addition of the UAH men's track program.

In 2005, UAH sent its largest contingent to the Nationals as six individuals qualified for the field. Freshman sprinter Shuneil Gadson qualified in two events. She competed in the 400m dash and in the 4x100 meter relay which teammates Crystal Harris, Easter Grant and Shana Levett. Katherine Herring qualified in the 1500 meter run, while Caitlin Heider made it in the 10K.

Gadson and Herring advanced to the finals in the 400m and 1500m events. Gadson earned the program's first ever All-America honors when she finished eighth in the 400m finals.

In 2006, UAH sprinter Shana Levett became the program's first indoor track All-American when she finished seventh in the 60 meter hurdles at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Levett repeated as Indoor Track All-American, finishing eighth in the 60m hurdles at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Boston, MA. Senior Caitlin Heider and sophomore Erin Zellers competed at the Outdoor Nationals in Charlotte, NC. Heider became the program’s first double qualifier, competing in two events, the 10,000 and 5,000 meter races. She came in 14th in the 10K final with a time of 38:07.04 and finished 16th at 18:02.66 in the 5K. Zellers came up just one place short of the finals in the 1,500, finishing 13th overall with a time of 4:39.91, .30 of advancing.

Head Coach David Cain earned South Region Indoor Women's Coach of the Year honors, while Assistant Coach Soyini Thompson-Murray was named South Region Outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year.
