Inaugural Women's Track Season begins March 3rd

The inaugural track season is bringing a lot of excitement to the squad of over twenty members, as they prepare themselves for the team's first competition on March 3.

The team has a solid base of distance runners from the cross country team who will spread themselves from the 400m to the 10,000m races. In addition to the cross country runners, the Lady Chargers have eleven athletes that will compete in a variety of events including pole vault, high jump, shot put, discus, javelin, long jump, and hurdles.

The meet schedule will take the Lady Chargers up against a wide range of competition. The Lady Chargers will see some top Division I teams at Auburn, Alabama, and Vanderbilt where Coach David Cain hopes for individual improvements against top competitors. The track meets at Sewanee, Rhodes, and Samford are ones Coach Cain will focus closely on team scoring and hope to bring home some team awards.

Although this is the first season for UAH track, Coach Cain believes there are several team members with good chances to run a qualifying time that would take them to the NCAA National Championships.

Some of the top performers to look for would be Aytree Blalock in the 5000 meter and 10,000 meter run; Lesley Davis in the 800 and 1500; Melinda Phillips in the jumps, and Bristol Hartlage in the throws.

The team is very optomistic entering the first season. The Lady Chargers hope to build a solid foundation on which to build the program for years to come.

First Meet: March 3, at the Sewanee Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, TN
