Opening the 2006-07 season on the road, the Alabama-Huntsville hockey team fell 8 to 1 to homestanding No. 15 Colorado College on Saturday night at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Special teams play led to four of the Tigers' first five tallies as CC scored a pair of short-handed goals and a pair of power-play measures in the first two periods of action to put the game well out of reach for the Chargers. The Tigers got on the board early in the contest as Jake Gannon scored a short-handed goal at 3:36 of the first. CC's Scott McCulloch would make it a 2-0 Tiger lead just over a minute and a half later scoring the first of three consecutive goals on the night at 5:09. McCulloch made it a 3-0 lead just before the end of the period with the game's first even-strength score with 1:11 remaining.
The second period saw the Chargers pick up the pace offensively netting nine shots on goal to the Tigers' 11 after being outshot 14-6 in the opening frame but UAH could not get a shot past CC's Drew O'Connell. McCulloch's big night continued in the second period as he notched his hat trick with a power-play tally at 7:02 to make it 4-0 CC before Billy Sweatt pushed the lead to 5-0 in the 17th minute.
The third period saw the Chargers finally light the lamp in the third minute of action when senior center David Nimmo (St. Albert, Alberta) ended CC's shutout hopes at 3:01 of the final stanza. The four-goal defecit was quickly erased however as CC's Lee Sweatt scored just over three minutes later. McCulloch then put home his fourth score of the night at 11:44 of the period. CC's Scott Thauwald wrapped up the scoring with a goal in the final minute at 19:13 of the third.
Senior Marc Narduzzi (Vancouver, British Columbia) took the loss in net for the Chargers allowing all seven goals and making 25 saves in his first career loss after entering the season with a career 4-0 mark. Sophomore netminder Jordan Erickson (Port McNeill, British Columbia) came on in relief of Narduzzi in the 52nd minute allowing one goal in relief while making four saves.
Outshot 37-23 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, the Chargers' loss marks the fourth straight season UAH has opened up play with a loss.
The Chargers continue their road trip on Sunday taking on familiar foe and former College Hockey America member Air Force at 4:05 p.m. at World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
