Alabama-Huntsville's "holiday road trip" got off on a bad foot Friday night as the Chargers could find no measure against Robert Morris and Colonial goaltender Christian Boucher, falling by a score of 1-0 in the first of eight consecutive road games stretching to the new year.
The Colonials struck with the game's only goal as Kurt Wright found himself taking several shots early in the first period. After a shot rang off the post glove side and went out of play, Wright took a pass off the ensuing faceoff and found the spot he was looking for to open the scoring, with assists going to Bryan Mills and David Boguslawski at 4:23 of the opening frame.
The one-goal deficit held through the second frame, while the Chargers found themselves a little too familiar with the penalty box, as Matt Montes (Forest Park, Ill.) and Shaun Arvai (West Lorne, Ont.) found themselves in the sin bin. Throughout the chaos, the Boys in Blue had two goals waved off during the period, both times the officials ruling the Robert Morris net was dislodged.
The Chargers got their own two-man advantage opportunity early in the third period, with Jace Busek and Tom Biondich taking simultaneous penalties with a man already in the box. Unfortunately, the Boys just couldn't cash in. The Colonials continued to sacrifice their bodies to keep the Charger pucks out of the net, and even with an extra attacker for the final 30 seconds of the third period, Colonial goaltender Christian Boucher kept the Chargers out and preserved the tenuous 1-0 victory.
Boucher made 25 saves in the shutout victory. Scott Munroe (Moose Jaw, Sask.) took the loss, despite keeping out 37 Colonial shots and earning the game's third star.
With the loss, UAH falls to 1-2-0 in College Hockey America play and 3-4-0 overall. RMU moved to 4-4-1 with the win in their conference opener. The teams will play again Saturday night to conclude the weekend series. Game audio is available over the internet via Yahoo! Sports beginning at 6:20 pm CST.
