Nimmo hat trick paces Chargers in victory

Mike Anderson, UAH Sports Information

David Nimmo
If there is one thing that can be pulled out of the weekend against RIT, it's that specialty teams are going to be particularly important in 2005-06. It was the case again as the Chargers took a 4-1 decision on the road to complete the weekend sweep in Rochester.

The Chargers struck first once again when Chris Martini (Calgary, Alb.) found the back of the net from Todd Bentley (Livonia, Mich.) and Jeff Winchester (Dalhousie, N.B.) at 5:28 of the first period to open the scoring for the Blue and White. David Nimmo (St. Albert, Alb.) extended the lead later in the second with what proved to be the game-winner, and his first goal of the year. The Tigers answered just 20 seconds later when Darrell Draper got the home team on the board and cut the score in half. The score held through to the intermission as UAH kept the lead 2-1.

Nimmo put the margin back to two goals with his second of the game on a two-man advantage at 1:17 of the period from Shaun Arvai (West Lorne, Ont.) and freshman Matt Sweazey (Toronto). Despite a combined 21 penalties through two periods, the Chargers kept the upper hand and went into the second intermission up 3-1.

Nimmo completed the hat trick on a four-on-four goal off a turnover. Nimmo was able to pick up the puck and beat RIT goaltender Jocelyn Guimond with lots of ice to work with to make it a 4-1 game. The Chargers had their backs against the wall as Bruce Mulherin (Red Deer, Alb.) took a major penalty late in the third, but the Boys in Blue held their own and protected the 4-1 victory.

Marc Narduzzi (Vancouver) got the win in net to go 1-0-0 on the year, making 28 saves on 29 shots. Jocelyn Guimond made 35 saves in the loss.

And for head coach Doug Ross, his 700th game behind the Charger bench was a successful one.

The Chargers return home to open College Hockey America play against conference foe Niagara Friday and Saturday night. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 each night.
