After a pair of crushing losses to Maine and a week off to think about it, the UAH Chargers were happy to get on the ice in Rochester, and took their first victory of the year by a 3-2 score.
As expected, the game started with a lot of hitting, and both teams registered penalties in the first three minutes. The Chargers struck first when A.J. Larivee (Dublin, Ont.) sent the puck in to Dominik Rozman (Wallaceburg, Ont.), who slid the pass over to Todd Bentley (Livonia, Mich.) for his first goal of the season. Despite taking 10 penalty minutes in the game's opening period, the Chargers hung on for the 1-0 lead at intermission.
Rozman made it a two goal advantage off an RIT turnover. Bentley picked up the puck and took advantage of the odd-man rush to beat the Tigers' Jocelyn Guimond to make the advantage 2-0. Bentley extended the lead to three just seven minutes into the second period, taking another Larivee pass and burying it in the back of the net.
The Tigers were not content to lay down on the night. Darrell Draper put the home team on the board at the 18:20 mark of the second with his second goal of the year from Darren Doherty, and the teams went in for the second intermission with a 3-1 advantage to the Blue and White.
Then the bottom fell out for the Chargers. Larivee was whistled for a checking from behind major late in the third period, and the Tigers took advantage when Darren Olson found the twine from Jesse Newman at 14:16 to cut the lead to one. Rozman later was whistled for a minor penalty, forcing the Chargers to kill penalties for the majority of the last 7:30 of the game. The 3-2 score held, and the Chargers came out victorious.
Senior goaltender Scott Munroe (Moose Jaw, Sask.) stopped 28 of 30 shots in the victory. Guimond made 25 saves in the loss.
The Chargers move to 1-2-0 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 3-4-0.
The two teams face off Saturday night at 6:00 CST to conclude the weekend series. Streaming audio will be provided by WITR-FM. The Chargers return home Friday night to open their College Hockey America schedule against Niagara. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
