It was an exciting few days leading up to our trip to face off with the #5 ranked team in the country Maine. We picked up two wins against Windsor, but were particularly happy with our effort on the Saturday game. “Duzzi” and “Tuzzi” (Jordan Erickson) split time in Saturdays game making a combined 8 saves on 10 shots. With Tuzzi’s first collegiate save coming on a breakaway. The ice technicians had their hand full that weekend, repairing the glass at the Von Braun Center because of those bone-crushing hits the Chargers dished out. We worked hard and made some adjustments and once again the week of practice before Maine was intense and electrifying. In Tuesday's practice Shaun Arvai unleashed his hardest slap shot ever recorded, reaching high speeds in excess of 67 Mph, beating Duzzi clean and bulging the twine for one heck of a practice goal. Even Coach Ross was impressed by the strength and skill! Denny Reagan followed up his game winning goal on Saturday night, and put on a goal-scoring clinic all week at practice. Bruce Mulherin made several of the Charger defense look like lost children in a grocery store with his dipsy doodle moves and slippery ways.
The first night in Maine was an eye-opener for the Chargers as their blinding speed on the fore check took us by surprise. We battled hard throughout the game and got better each period but we fell short in the end losing 3-1. Scott “Show Money” Munroe was unbelievable in this contest, stopping almost everything but the kitchen sink in the contest, receiving the second star of the game. Mike Salekin scored the lone goal for the Chargers, on a wrist shot from the slot, followed by a smooth, but out of control celebration. Saturday night’s game, the boys came out fired up and ready to go, in hopes of spoiling Maine's homecoming night. We had the Black Bears on their heels for the first two periods, and went to the locker room after the second tied at zero. With under ten minutes to play the Chargers got a rough set of calls. This led to a Maine power play goal and, eventually, our second loss of the season. We our looking forward to our two road games against RIT, and looking forward to nothing less then two wins.
