In the history of the UAH Chargers and the Maine Black Bears, you can see a lot of sevens and eights on the scorecard. In the recent past, however, defensive struggles have been the norm. It was the case again Saturday night once again, as the Chargers and Black Bears were both scoreless through two periods. It was a flurry in the final fifteen minutes that created the misleading 4-0 final in favor of the home team.
Scott Munroe (Moose Jaw, Sask.) was masterful once again, equaling his save total of 34 from the previous night before allowing Maine's first goal of the night.
It was Greg Moore getting a quick shot from a Michel Leveille faceoff win and sneaking it past Munroe at the eight-minute mark of the third period. The goal fired up UAH, and the Chargers began to play with renewed fire to try and find the equalizer.
A costly bench minor late in the third spelled trouble for the Chargers. The Chargers won the ensuing faceoff and controlled on their own blue line trying to kill time, but the Charger defense made an errant pass, and Billy Ryan picked up the puck in neutral ice and skated in, scoring five-hole on the breakaway to make the margin two goals.
Greg Moore put the nail in the coffin about a minute later, when he got a shot to deflect off a Charger stick and over the right shoulder of Munroe to make it a 3-0 game. Josh Soares added a five-on-three goal with just over a minute to go to make the final score.
In the end, Munroe stopped 41 shots and earned the third star on the evening.
The Boys in Blue look to regroup this week as they prepare to face the Tigers of the Rochester Institute of Technology in the first ever Division I game in Frank Ritter Memorial Arena Nov. 4 and 5. Faceoff is 6:05 p.m. Central Time each night.
