The Alabama-Huntsville hockey squad got their season started off on the right note, downing the University of Windsor by a score of 5-0 at the Von Braun Center.
The hits were fast and furious out of the gate, as freshman Scott Kalinchuk (Bowsman, MB) took one Lancers' helmet off early, and a massive check against the boards by Todd Bentley (Livonia, MI) stopped play for 6 minutes as the glass here in the VBC was dislodged.
The shooting was intense as well, as the Chargers peppered Jay Ewasiuk with 13 shots in the first period, as the Lancers only managed to get four past the Charger defense on net. It was Mike Salekin (Castelgar, BC) getting the Chargers on the board first, taking a Brett McConnachie shot from the point and burying it past Ewasiuk for the early 1-0 advantage with a power play marker.
Bentley gave UAH the two goal advantage in the second period, taking a Jeremy Schrieber (Medicine Hat, AB) slapper off a face off and getting the redirection. Tyler Hilbert (Okotoks, AB) got the second assist on the goal.
Steve Canter (St. Louis, MO) got the first of two goals on the night late in the second, getting a pass ahead from Grant Selinger (Regina, SK) and slammed a puck top-shelf past Ewasiuk on the breakaway at 18:57 of the period. Salekin made the initial pass to get the play started.
Canter would strike again just ten seconds into the third period, sneaking into the crease and wristing another top-shelf goal past the Windsor netminder, taking assists from Bruce Mulherin (Red Deer, AB) and Schreiber.
Jeff Winchester (Dalhousie, NB) finished the scoring for the Chargers at 2:41 of the third. Josh Murray fed the puck back to Schreiber, then over to Winchester for the goal from the point.
In all, the Chargers sent 45 shots at Lancer goaltender Jay Ewasiuk, who had 40 saves. Scott Munroe (Moose Jaw, SK) stopped all 15 Lancer shots in the exhibition shutout. He earned second star honors for his efforts.
Steve Canter's two goals got him the first star, while Jeremy Schreiber took the third star after a three-assist night.
The Chargers and Lancers complete the weekend series Saturday night, with a 7:05 pm faceoff.
