Records fall as Chargers defeat Warriors

Bruce Mulherin taps in his first of two goals in a 2-1 defeat of Wayne State (George Olden)
Powered behind a pair of goals from Bruce Mulherin (Red Deer, Alb.), the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers took a 2-1 decision over College Hockey America foe Wayne State on Saturday night at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center.

After an uneventful first period, the UAH power play got the offense going just over eight minutes into the second frame when the Chargers' senior left wing slapped a Jeremy Schreiber (Medicine Hat, Alberta) rebound past WSU goaltender Will Hooper. Chris Martini (Calgary) got the second assist on the goal.

The Chargers got a tough break with 7:26 remaining in the second period when a second goal, this one shorthanded, by Mulherin was waved off when Mike Salekin (Castlegar, B.C.) was ruled in the crease during the shot. The UAH bench took offense and was charged with a bench minor following the nullification that lead to a WSU 5-on-3 power-play opportunity. The Charger penalty kill stood tall and kept the 1-0 score at that point.

The third period saw the Warriors come out and control play early and it resulted in a goal at the four-minute mark as Wayne State’s Adam Krug ended senior netminder Scott Munroe’s (Moose Jaw, Sask.) shutout bid with his sixth tally of the season.

Mulherin then made up for his no-goal with time waining. After Matt Krug's vicious hit on David Nimmo (St. Albert, Alb.) landed him in the sin bin with a boarding call, the Chargers were able to set up the offense, and just as the penalty expired, Martini found Mulherin all alone in the slot, and fed him for the top-shelf goal with just 79 seconds remaining in regulation. The Warriors pulled Hooper for the extra skater, but could not find the equalizer, and the Chargers prevailed.

Munroe picked up the win in net on a 32 save effort as UAH improves to 17-10-2 overall and, more importantly, 11-5-1 in College Hockey America. Tonight’s win combined with Bemidji State’s loss at Niagara gives the Chargers a two-point lead in the CHA standings.

Several records were broken in tonight's game as well. Scott Munroe broke his fourth career goaltending mark at UAH, surpassing Derek Puppa's minutes played mark. Jeremy Schreiber equalled a couple of conference marks for career points and career assists, both previously the sole possession of former Charger Tyler Butler.

The Chargers wrap up the 2005-06 home schedule on Saturday going for the sweep of the Warriors on “Senior Day” at 4:05 p.m.
