Chargers break out brooms, sweep Beavers back to Minnesota

Jamie Gilliam, UAH Sports Information

Having picked up a huge two points from Bemidji State in the race for the College Hockey America championship on Friday night, the Alabama-Huntsville hockey team finished off the sweep with a 4-2 decision over the Beavers on Saturday afternoon at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. Coming into the weekend tied for first with BSU, UAH now holds a four-point lead in the league standings.

The Charger power play unit got the job done for UAH early in the first as junior defenseman Mike Salekin (Castlegar, B.C.) rifled a shot past BSU's Layne Sedevie for the 1-0 lead on the five-on-three man advantage with assists from junior defenseman Shaun Arvai (West Lorne, Ont.) and junior center David Nimmo (St. Albert, Alb.) at 6:51. The score remained 1-0 at the first break despite Bemidji State outshooting UAH 18-11 in the opening frame.

Bemidji State kept the pressure up on the Chargers and scored early in the second as Riley Weselowski ended Scott Munroe's (Moose Jaw, Sask.) shutout bid at 3:57 of the second. The score remained knotted at one through the remainder of the second as both goaltenders stood tall in net.

Nearly mid-way through the third the Chargers regained the lead as junior center Grant Selinger (Regina, Sask.) took the puck behind the BSU net and fired a low angle shot off of Sedevie that Bentley crashed in and deposited the rebound in the back of the net at 9:40. No sooner than the Charger faithful had sat down from cheering for Bentley's goal that they saw the one-goal lead evaporate exactly one minute later as BSU's Blaine Jarvis made the Chargers pay for a turnover in their own end for a 2-2 tie at 10:40.

The Charger power play would be the difference in the game as BSU's Jean-Guy Gervais took a penalty for roughing after the whistle had blown with just under six minutes to play. With time winding down on the power play, the Chargers won the faceoff and Nimmo sent the puck over to Arvai, who sent the puck in on net and junior left wing Steve Canter (St. Louis, Mo.) scored his fouth game-winning goal of the season. UAH sealed the win with 47 ticks left on the clock as junior Brett McConnachie (Ajax, Ont.) stole the puck in the Bemidji State end and passed off to linemate senior Bruce Mulherin (Red Deer, Alb.) for the empty netter.

Munroe picked up the win in net making 36 saves as UAH improves to 14-8-2 overall and 10-3-1 in the CHA. Sedevie made 30 saves in the losing effort as the Beavers fall to 13-10-3 overall and 8-5-1 in league play. The UAH penalty kill shutout BSU again on Saturday night as the Beavers 0-for-5 after a 0-11 performance on Friday night.

The Chargers step out of conference play next weekend hosting RIT at the Von Braun Center on Friday and Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. UAH is hosting a celebration of the 1996 national championship on Saturday night with a presentation after the first period and a public reception following the game. UAH-Bemidji State Game Two Box Score

Chargers take first from Beavers

Scott Munroe
A battle of the top two teams in College Hockey America, the Alabama-Huntsville Charger hockey squad downed visiting Bemidji State 2-1 on Friday night at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center.

The Chargers got an early break in the opening period as senior left wing Bruce Mulherin (Red Deer, Alb.) scored the game’s opening tally shorthanded after Bemidji State’s goaltender Matt Clime misplayed a bouncing puck off the boards at 3:44. Crashing the net, Mulherin found a gaping net and put the puck in.

The Beavers wasted little time knotting the game back up cashing in on a Charger defensive turnover at 5:12 of the first ending senior netminder Scott Munroe’s (Moose Jaw, Sask.) shutout hopes as Tyler Scofield scored for BSU.

Senior center Chris Martini (Calgary) put the Chargers back in front with just over four minutes remaining in the first taking a pass from junior defenseman Shaun Arvai (West Lorne, Ont.) turning around 180 degrees and beating Clime five hole from just inside the blue line to give UAH a 2-1 lead.

The Chargers started out strong in the third period killing of the remainder of a five-on-three power play.

After UAH’s Brett McConnachie (Ajax, Ont.) was slammed by two BSU players into Climie a major melee ensued in front of the net with sticks and gloves flying between the two squads. Despite the skirmish only roughing minors were issued with unbelievably the Chargers ending up on the short end and on the power play.

Both teams failed to register a power play marker in the contest, as UAH went 0-6 on the game, while Bemidji State was held scoreless in 10 man-advantage opportunities. Munroe made 33 saves as UAH held on to improve to 13-8-2 and 9-3-1 in the CHA take over sole possession of first place. Bemidji State dropped to 13-9-3 and 8-4-1 in league play as Climie stopped 30 shots in the loss.

The two teams battle again on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Von Braun Center.
