The Chargers broke the scoring open early, when Bruce Mulherin (Red Deer, Alb.) took advantage of a five-on-three power play to tally his seventh goal of the season from Jeff Winchester (Dalhousie, N.B.) and Jeremy Schreiber (Medicine Hat, Alb.). Grant Selinger (Regina, Sask.) added his fourth of the year later in the period off a pass from Winchester. Derek Punches ended the scoring drought for Wayne State two minutes later on a power play opportunity to make it a 2-1 game after the first period.
The Boys in Blue got back to the swing of things in the second period, as Brett McConnachie (Ajax, Ont.) notched his fifth of the year on a power play from Winchester and Mulherin. Punches got the gate 12 minutes into the second on a checking from behind penalty, and Mulherin cashed in with his second of the game from Chris Martini (Calgary) and Schreiber.
The Chargers began to pile it on in the third period. Senior Todd Bentley (Livonia, Mich.) added his sixth goal of the season after taking a pass from Dominik Rozman (Wallaceburg, Ont.) and found himself right in front of Warrior goaltender Will Hooper, and took his time before flipping the puck high for the marker. Selinger scored his second counter of the night from Tyler Hilbert (Okotoks, Alb.) and A.J. Larivee (Dublin, Ont.) halfway through the third. Wayne State responded with a goal in the final minute, but the Chargers were too much, and took the 6-2 final.
Winchester and Schreiber each had three assist nights, earning the second and third stars, respectively. Mulherin's two-goal, one-assist game got him the first star of the game. In net, Scott Munroe (Moose Jaw, Sask.) had 20 saves to push the Chargers' record to 12-8-2 overall and 8-3-1 in College Hockey America. The win pushes the Chargers into a tie with Bemidji State for first place in the conference.
The Boys in Blue return home for a showdown with the Beavers of Bemidji State for first place in College Hockey America next weekend. Game times are 7:05 p.m. Friday and 4:05 p.m. Saturday.
