UAH fights hard but comes up empty

When the smoke had cleared from the war in Madison, Wisc., last weekend, the Chargers had dropped a pair of close contests to the homestanding University of Wiconsin Badgers but UAH played them toe-to-toe falling 4-2 on Friday night and 3-2 on Saturday night.
Friday night's contest saw the Badgers jump out to a 4-0 lead on the Chargers as UW's Brad Winchester would score the first goal of the night for UW and add assists on two of the following goals. The Chargers finally got on the board at the 13:58 mark of the third as senior Karlis Zirnis capitalized on the power play scoring the first goal of the year with assists from junior captain Mike Funk and sophomore Jared Ross. With less than two remaining, sophomore Craig Bushey pulled UAH within a pair of goals with his first goal of the season. The big difference in the game was Badger goaltender Scott Kabatoff as UAH outshot UW 33-32 but Kabatoff turned away 31 attempts.
The Badgers knew UAH was looking for the upset and came ready to play on Saturday night but so were the Chargers. After a scoreless first period, UW drew first blood as Nick Licari scored at the 3:21 mark to put the Badgers out in front 1-0. Just over four minutes later Chris Julka floated a shot past UAH goalkeeper Adam MacLean to give UW a 2-0 lead and force MacLean to the bench. With freshman Scott Munroe between the pipes for the Chargers, the Badgers struck again in the second period to go up 3-0 before Zirnis scored his second goal in as many nights to make it 3-1.
A powerplay goal by Ross in the third with under seven minutes left to play put all the fans on the edge of their seats making it a one-goal game again. After allowing the lone goal, Munroe stopped 15 Badger scoring attempts.
The Chargers head west this weekend taking on third-ranked Denver University in the Mile High City Friday night at 8:35 and Saturday night at 8:05. Television coverage on Friday night will be provided by Fox Sports Rocky Mountain for those with a satellite available.
Series: at the Denver University, Friday, Oct. 25th, 8:35 and Saturday, Oct. 26th, 8:05 p.m.
Charger Radio and Sportsjuice.com teamup to broadcast Charger hockey
HUNTSVILLE - Charger Radio is proud to announce its partnership with SportsJuice.com to provide online broadcasts of UAH Men's Ice Hockey for the 2002-2003 season.
Fans will be able to log in to the Charger Radio website at http://www.sportsjuice.com/providers/uah/ or click on the logo and follow the Chargers as they embark on their most difficult schedule in the 23 year history of the team.
Mike Anderson and Geof Morris will anchor the first broadcast team to cover all Charger hockey contests, home and away. "This is a great opportunity for fans both in Huntsville and around the world to follow Charger hockey like never before," said Anderson. "We've assembled a dedicated team who will work hard to present all of the action on the ice."
Anderson and Morris will be assisted by George Olden on location and Jim Chaloupka in the studio for all 34 regular-season contests and post-season contests.
During the 2001-2002 season, Charger Radio was able to provide internet broadcasts of some UAH games, including the College Hockey America tournament. Due to technical difficulties, fans had problems listening in to games last season. "SportsJuice.com is going to enable us to overcome the technical hurdles that limited our broadcasts last year," said Morris of the partnership. "That will make for a much more enjoyable experience, not only for our fans, but for Mike and I, since we know that we'll be getting our broadcast out to as many listeners as we can."
The Charger hockey season begins October 18 when the Chargers travel to Madison, Wisconsin to face the Wisconsin Badgers. Fans can tune in to the pre-game show 30 minutes prior to face off.
Charger Radio is a student-run radio station at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The station is funded by student activities fees and outside underwriting. Charger Radio plans to begin its full broadcast schedule in January 2003.
