Huntsville -- Looking to claim College Hockey America's first ever automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in 2002-03, the UAH Charger hockey squad takes the ice Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Von Braun Center for a Blue-White Game followed by "Skate With the Chargers" from 11-1. Saturday's opportunity will be the only chance to see the Chargers in action on their home ice during the month of October as UAH opens up the season at Wisconsin on Oct. 14-15 in Madison, Wisc., and then travels west to take on the Denver Pioneers on Oct. 25-26.
"This will be a great chance for the fans to come out and see the team workout before the season starts and then hang around and skate with the guys," noted head coach Doug Ross. "We're looking forward to getting the 2002-03 season underway."
The 2002-03 UAH squad returns 21 of 23 players from last season's CHA tournament runner-up squad including a talent-laden senior class headlined by All-CHA first-teamer Tyler Butler. The Chargers open up the home schedule in the friendly confines of the Von Braun Center on Nov. 15-16 as CHA rival Air Force comes to the Rocket City.
Admission to the Blue-White game is free to the public and players will be available postgame for autographs and photo opportunities. There will be a "Skate With the Chargers" fundraiser which lasts from 11-1. Fans of all ages are encouraged to take the ice with your favorite players from UAH for $5. Skate rentals and concessions will be available.
