The Chargers took the nation's second-longest winning streak into Clauss Ice Arena in Findlay, Ohio, and came out with four conference points, an extended lead in the College Hockey America standings, and the longest unbeaten streak in the nation.
Head coach Doug Ross would put Scott Munroe between the pipes Friday night against the Findlay Oilers, who sent out Kevin Fines, one of the best goaltenders in the conference to this point. Steve Charlebois would score the first of his two goals on the night at the 16:11 mark from Jason Hawes and Ryan Leasa. The Chargers took the 1-0 lead into the locker room, despite being outshot 12-6 in the frame. Munroe would shine, stopping all 12 opportunities for the Oilers.
The Oilers came out of the locker room with fire, and on a short-handed opportunity, DJ Vogt took a long pass out of the Findlay end to get around Jason Hawes and score, tying the game up. Jared Ross would answer for the Chargers at 12:58, netting his 8th of the season from Steve Milosevski and Tyler Butler. Charlebois put home the game winner on a two-on-one breakaway with Jason Hawes five minutes later, with Butler getting the second assist.
Ryan Leasa would slam the door on the power play in the third period, ripping home his fourth of the year from Hawes and Joel Bresciani at 1:47. Rigel Shaw would answer at 6:17 on the power play, but it wasn't enough. Jeremy Schriber would close out scoring for the Chargers at the 14:45 mark, scoring his fourth of the season short-handed, with assists to Charlebois and Mike Funk, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Chargers.
Things got ugly late in the third, when Paul Prefontaine made a run at Scott Munroe and bedlam ensued. Craig Bushey and Prefontaine squared off and almost dropped the gloves, but thought better of it. Keith Rowe and Brandon Harker each got double-minors for roughing, and Prefontaine got a minor for charging in the initial foul. All in all, the teams would rack up 21 combined penalties on the evening.
Ryan Leasa, with his two point performance (1g, 1a) earned him the third star of the game. Scott Munroe got the second star, stopping 34 of 36 shots for the Chargers. Steve Charlebois was the first star of the game, racking up three points on the night (2g, 1a).
Saturday night it would be Mark Byrne between the posts for the Chargers against Findlay's Jamie VandeSpyker, and it was more of the same as the Chargers came out on fire early. Jackson Harren would open scoring for the Chargers with his first of the year at 4:58 from Jason Tinwick and Todd Bentley. The Chargers would take that 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first.
Tyler Butler would net his third of the year just as the Charger power play expired at 9:14 of the second. Creeping up from the point, Butler would take a centering pass from Jared Ross, and his blast from the hash marks would find a home high on the glove side. Craig Bushey got the second assist on the goal.
Lee Arnold would answer with the only Oiler even-strength goal of the weekend, sneaking one past Mark Byrne at 13:20 to make it a 2-1 Charger lead. Steve Charlebois would answer on the power play just 80 seconds later with assists from Leasa and Hawes with what would turn out to be the game-winner.
Nick Udovicic would put in his ninth of the year on the power-play as he camped out in front of the crease long enough to bang one past Byrne, and the second period would end with the Chargers ahead 3-2.
Penalties would be the story of the third period, as the game dragged down again. The first of two big scrums would occur at the 7:22 mark, when Joel Bresciani would meet up with Nick Udovicic as both skated to the bench during a stoppage. The two would get into it and both teams skated to the benches to aid. Keith Rowe and Rigel Shaw would each get double-minors for roughing. Bresciani went for the hit after the whistle, and Udovicic served a 10-minute misconduct.
The second scrum occurred at 17:05, when Paul Prefontaine would lose his helmet during play as he and Keith Rowe were going at each other. The referee blew the whistle to stop play and Prefontaine would take a big open ice hit from Ryan Leasa, who later said that he was concerned that Prefontaine was going to cross check him, and made the hit in self-defense. Prefontaine and Rowe would serve double-minors for roughing, and Leasa would go in for hitting after the whistle for his involvement.
The hand-eye coordination of Charger captain would be displayed in the third, as he bats home Ian Fletcher's deflected pass out of mid-air to score his ninth goal of the season at 15:08 of the third. Jeremy Schreiber would add an assist to the goal. Steve Charlebois would close out scoring by putting the nail in the coffin with a short-handed empty-net goal at 18:23, sprawling out to sneak the puck between Tyler Butler and a Oiler attacker from the opposite blue line, making the final score 5-2 Saturday night.
Jamie VandeSpyker's 37 save night earned him the third star. Mark Byrne, stopping 27 of 29 Oiler shots, earned second star. Steve Charlebois, with his second two-goal night of the weekend, got first star. Charlebois's five-point weekend (2g, 3a) also earned him CHA Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The Chargers move to 11-7-2 overall, 6-1-1 in conference play to lead the CHA with 13 points. The Oilers fell to 8-11-1, 1-4-1 in CHA play, sitting in 6th place with 3 points.
