UAH swept at Cornell

Cornell Sports Information

The Charger hockey squad knew they would be facing one of the toughest teams in the country against the Cornell Big Red and they were right. Special teams plagued UAH as Cornell swept the Chargers 6-1 and 5-2 over the weekend.

Through two periods of play on Friday night, the Chargers were still in the game trailing 3-1 with Jason Tinwick providing the lone goal for UAH. Things would turn ugly in the third period however, as the Chargers allowed three Big Red power-play goals to put the game away. UAH was penalized 12 times for 24 minutes in game one of the series and squandered four power-play opportunities. Sophomore Adam MacLean stopped 32 Cornell shots in the loss.

After one period of play on Saturday night the Chargers had the lead after junior Karlis Zirnis netted the game's first goal to give UAH a 1-0 advantage over the Big Red. Krzysztof Wieckowski would net an even-strength and a power play goal in the second period to give Cornell a 2-1 lead before Scott Krahn would stretch the lead to 3-1 for the Big Red. Junior defenseman Tyler Butler closed the gap to 3-2 with one minute to play in the second period before the Big Red special teams took advantage of a pair of power plays and put the game away. Mark Byrne turned away 39 saves in the losing effort.
