Ithaca, N.Y. - Center Krzysztof Wieckowski scored two goals, and sophomore Scott Krahn added the game winner as Cornell defeated Alabama-Huntsville 5-2 in a non-league men's hockey game Saturday evening at Lynah Rink.
The Big Red, now 2-0, scored three goals in the second period and two more in the third to overcome a 1-0 deficit after the first period. Ryan Vesce and Doug Murray each tallied once and added an assist for Cornell which outshot the Chargers 44-18. Big Red senior Matt Underhill made his first start of the season in goal and made 16 saves.
Karlis Zirnus and Tyler Butler scored for Alabama-Huntsville, which fell to 5-3. Mark Byrne played 60 minutes in goal and stopped 39 shots including 14 in the first period.
Zirnis put the Chargers in front 1-0 when he scored during a scramble in front of Underhill at 6:50 of the opening period.
Wieckowski tied the contest at 4:17 of the middle period and then scored on a power play 2:27 later to put the Big Red in front for good. Krahn tallied the game winner while Cornell was skating with a man advantage at 10:18. Brian McMeekin and Sam Paolini picked up assists. Butler capitalized on a Big Red turnover in its offensive zone and beat Underhill one second before the buzzer sounded to end the middle period.
Murray put Cornell ahead 4-2 with a power-play tally just 0:32 into the final period. Vesce completed the scoring at 11:14, 23 seconds after the Chargers' Joel Bresciani was penalized for roughing.
