Defenseman Doug Murray scored twice and added an assist
as the Cornell men's hockey team opened its season with
a 6-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville Friday evening at
Lynah Rink.
The Big Red broke open a scoreless game with three
goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period and
added three more in the third. Freshman Paul
Varteressian, David Francis, Greg Hornby and Ryan Vesce
also tallied for Cornell, which outshot the Chargers 40-
25. Big Red freshman David LeNeveu played sixty minutes
in goal and made 24 saves, including 11 in the first
period.
Jason Tinwick scored the Chargers' only goal in the
second period, and Adam MacLean stopped 32 shots in
goal. Alabama-Huntsville fell to 5-2 on the season.
Varteressian put the Big Red ahead 1-0 with his first
career marker when he tipped a shot by MacLean at 2:35,
but Tinwick tallied 33 seconds later to tie the game.
Francis scored the game winner at 5:19 with assists
going to Brian McMeekin and Shane Palahicky. Hornby
scored the first of his career at 9:48 for a 3-1
Cornell lead after 40 minutes.
The Big Red added three power-play goals in the final
period. Vesce converted a rebound of a shot by Stephen
Baby at 6:58 and Murray tallied at 13:59 and 19:08.
The teams will play again Saturday evening at Lynah
Rink. Game time is 7 p.m.
