When a pair of rivals meet for athletic competition things are usually heated and emotional and such was the case of the meeting of the Chargers and the Bemidji State Beavers over the weekend.
With a rivalry dating back to the team's stint in Division II hockey, UAH entered the series with a six-game winning streak against BSU and had won ten of the last 11 matches against the Beavers.
On Friday night, the Beavers were out to snap the streak against their foe scoring two first period goals and adding two more in the second after which UAH starting netminder Adam MacLean was ejected by the officials and was replaced by Mike Slaton. Junior Joel Bresciani finally got things rolling for the Chargers with his first goal of the season.
Holding a 4-1 lead, Bemidji State extended the measure to 5-1 late in the second period and the score remained that way heading into the second intermission. Bresciani would add his second goal of the night to close things up a bit just over five minutes into the third, but BSU would rally with two more goals to push the lead to 7-2 before the Jason Tinwick scored his fourth goal of the season. The seven Beaver goals were the most a Charger defense had allowed to BSU.
Hoping to earn a split in the series, the Chargers came out playing hard and as freshman Doug Watkins scored his first collegiate goal as UAH took advantage of the powerplay with under six minutes to play in the first. Fellow newcomer Keith Rowe extended the UAH lead to 2-0 16 minutes into the first.
In a complete reversal of Friday night's game, Jessi Otis added a pair of UAH goals to extend the lead to 4-0 as the Beaver's had done the night before. The Beavers would not give up however scoring a power-play and even-strength goal to tighten things to 4-2 before junior defenseman Tyler Butler found the back of the net with 1:04 remaining in the second to push the lead to three again.
Freshman Craig Bushey added an empty-netter to make the lead 6-2 at 17:41 to play in the game, before Bemidji added an extra-attacker goal for the 6-3 final. Junior goaltender Mark Byrne picked up his third conference win to remain unbeaten in CHA play.
