Huntsville, AL - The UAH ice hockey team is now officially a member of NCAA Division I. In a letter from the NCAA, the Charger staff was notified of the program's change of status.
"We are excited about our provisional period being over, and now we can compete with the best in the country for a chance to play for a national championship," said UAH Director of Athletics Jim Harris.
Charger coach Doug Ross agrees. "I think our players are going to be extremely excited about it," he said. "It'll give us a big boost in recruiting now that players know that we have a way to get to the playoffs. They want to play in that tournament, and I want to coach in it….it's our goal to get there."
The Chargers are now eligible to receive an at-large bid to the postseason playoffs. In accordance with NCAA bylaws, UAH must remain in Division I in hockey for a minimum of three years.
