Chargers rip Falcons in semifinal

Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

The Chargers scored early and often on College Hockey America Player of the Year Marc Kielkucki advancing the the CHA Tournament Championship game with a 7-0 win at the Von Braun Center.

It is the second time this season that the Chargers have shutout Air Force. It's also the worst loss of the season for Air Force (16-16-4). Four different players scored for the Chargers (21-11-1), who will play Wayne State for the 2001 conference title. The Warriors knocked off defending CHA champion Niagara 3-2 in overtime.

Perhaps feeling a bit snubbed by league voters, UAH goalie Mark Byrne earned his sixth shutout of the season. He is now tied for the UAH record for career shutouts with seven. Byrne finished the game with 16 saves.

Offensively, the Chargers came out attacking early, scoring two goals in the first period. Darren Curry put the Chargers on the board at 2:59 with a sweet shot under Kielkucki. Then, four minutes later, Ryan McCormack scored off of an assist from Karlis Zirnis at the 6:22 mark.

In the second period, the Chargers poured it on, adding three more goals. McCormack wasting little time lighting the lamp for the second time in the game. He smacked home his 13th goal of the season only 18 seconds into the period to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

The fourth UAH goal came gift-wrapped from the Falcons. Buck Kozlowski slid the puck past his own netminder into the goal for another UAH goal. Jason Hawes was credited with the goal for the Chargers.

The Falcons tried to get out of the second period without further damage, but Steve Charlebois scored a goal with the Chargers a man down to make the score 5-0.

In the final period, Jason Tinwick and Curry added two more goals to round out the scoring.
