Chargers take over sole possession of first place in the CHA with sweep of Wayne State

Todd Watts, UAH Sports Information

For the second time in as many weeks the Chargers have completed a season sweep of a CHA opponent. Last weekend they polished off Bemidji State University and this weekend they completed the season sweep of Wayne State 8-5 and 6-3. The wins, coupled with Niagara's loss to Bemidji State on Friday has the Chargers all alone at the top of College Hockey America.

In Friday night's contest it became very evident that the score was going to be high by the end of the game. In the first period, the two teams combined to score seven goals. The Chargers went to the lockerroom holding a 4-3 lead.

Ryan McCormack opened the scoring just 2:22 into the game with a power-play goal. However, it didn't take long for the Warriors for fire back. Just one minute and twenty-seven seconds later the Warriors evened the score with a power-play tally of their own.

At the 7:34 mark of the first Karlis Zirnis tapped in his 12th goal of the season to put the Chargers in the lead at, 2-1. Once again, the Warriors tied the game up with another power-play goal at 14:32 in the first. Then, just twenty-four seconds later the Warriors took the lead, 3-2, with yet another power-play goal. The Warriors would finish the night 3-of-6 on the power-play.

With just fifty-nine seconds remaining in the period, Mike Funk scored another power-play goal to tie the game. Then, with fourteen seconds remaining Ron Baker scored the Chargers' third power-play goal of the period to put UAH back on top at 4-3.

In the second period, the Chargers extended their lead to 5-3 when Gerald Overton lit the lamp for the first time this season at 6:40 in the second. Wayne State would answer just two minutes later with a goal at 8:40 in the second. Then, with :44 seconds remaining in the period the Warriors would tie the game at 5-all when Chris Vail tapped in his 8th of the season.

The Chargers were determined to make this Senior weekend something special though and they came out of the locker room ready to play the third period. At 7:47 Ron Baker scored his second of the night on the power-play making the Chargers 4-for-7 with the man advantage. At 17:13 a defensive lapse saw Charlebois and Bresciani in a two-on-none situation and Bresciani scored with a wicked wrister that the goalie had no chance to stop. Forty-four seconds later Karlis Zirnis tapped the insurance marker with his second goal of the night and team leading thirteenth for the season.

Saturday's game was much the same type of shutout as the Friday contest. However, this game was far less of a nailbitter as the Chargers were able to pick-up a 3-0 lead with just 7:15 elapsed in the first. This was the weekend that the Chargers acknowledge the seniors on the team, so what better way to finish this final home stand than to start all of your seniors. Coach Ross started Ron Baker at left wing, Dwayne Blais at center, and Ryan McCormack at right wing, Ian Fletcher and Darren Curry manned the points and Mark Byrne guarded the net.

What a great way to finish the weekend indeed. It took just twelve seconds for the all senior offensive line to put the puck in the net. Ryan McCormack scored the goal on assists from Ron Baker and Dwayne Blais.

This was also a weekend of firsts, as Overton scored his first goal of the season on Friday night, Steve Milosevski scored his first ever goal in the Charger uniform on Saturday afternoon. Milosevski received a pass through the crease from Charlebois and put the biscuit in the basket at 3:53 elapsed in the first.

At 7:15 in the first, just six seconds after coming out the penalty box, Dwayne Blais went streaking down the ice in the same fashion that gave him his nickname "the Blaiser" and scored on a defenseless Wayne State goaltender. Blaiser's goal at 7:15 put the Chargers up 3-0 and they would never relinquish the lead.

At 11:41, Wayne State's Brent Renfrew got the Warriors on the board with an even-strength goal closing out the first period with the Chargers leading 3-1.

In the second period, the Chargers went back to work on the power-play and Mike Funk scored his tenth goal of the season just 1:09 into the second with assists from Dwayne Blais and Karlis Zirnis.

In the third period, the action heated up a bit as the two teams scored two goals apiece. At 7:12 of the third Kevin Ridgeway put the puck in the top left corner of the net on a beautiful one-timer shot. However, the Warriors scored goals at 9:53 and 18:25 to get the score back to a more respectable margin of 5-3.

With 1:25 remaining in the third the Warriors pulled the goaltender in favor the extra attacker. Unfortunately for the Warriors the Chargers' Jessi Otis put the nail in the coffin with just four seconds remaining in the game when he scored on the empty net.

On the weekend the Chargers were 5-12 on the power-play. However, the Warriors were 4-for-12 on the power-play, something that is not too common given the fact that the Chargers had the third ranked penalty-kill in the nation and number one penalty-kill in the CHA.
