The Charger headache continues with Shootout setbacks...
Nebraska-Omaha captures Shootout title

Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

If the Chargers had a headache after being saddled with a five game losing streak, another bad weekend has escalated the pain to the migraine level. After losses to Canisius and Massachusetts-Lowell in the Chargers own SCI Holiday Shootout, the losing streak is now seven since UAH opened the season 8-1 and threatened to break into the Division I Top 15.

On Friday night, the Chargers (8-8) outshot Canisius a whopping 43-19, but couldn't score until the final period. By that time, Canisius had put the Chargers in a deep hole and went on to knock off the host team 4-2.

Canisius built a 3-0 lead after two periods. Joel Bresciani scored the first UAH goal 1:54 into the third period. With under two minutes left in the game, Ryan McCormack cut the lead to one with a goal as the Chargers went with the extra attacker. However, Canisius ended the comeback with an empty net goal with less than a minute left.

The loss forced the Chargers into the consolation game against UMass-Lowell (7-8-2). The River Hawks had lost to Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night. The Chargers had hoped to salvage something good from the Shootout and in the process, stop the bleeding before heading into the meat of the CHA schedule.

Things started out well enough for UAH as Mike Funk staked the Chargers to a 1-0 lead with a goal 7:57 in the game. The Chargers held the shutout intact through the first period. But, the bottom fell out in the final two periods.

The River Hawks scored five unanswered goals in the next two periods to bury the Chargers 5-1 to claim third place in the Shootout. Of those five goals, two were power play goals and one came on an empty net shot.

Nebraska-Omaha claims SCI Shootout title with win over Canisius
The Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha (11-10-1) claimed the SCI Holiday Shootout with a 3-1 win over Canisius College (5-7-2).

Allen Carr broke a 1-1 tie in the second period with a goal at the 8:35 mark. The Mavericks added an empty net goal with only 24 seconds left in the game to put the nail in the coffin.

Next Series: at Wayne State in Detroit, MI on January 5-6, 7:00 p.m.
