Chargers take 5-game losing streak home for Christmas

Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

The Chargers tailspin reached the critical point following their trip to Mankato. The Chargers were swept for the second time in as many weeks 4-2 and 3-2 by Minnesota State-Mankato. The two losses have the Chargers stalled in the midst of their worst losing streak since 1990 at five games. The streak reached 10 games during the 1989-90 season.

It was the third period that doomed the Chargers in both games against the Mavericks. In the first game, UAH jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals by Tyler Butler and Jason Hawes. The two goals came less than a minute apart in the first period.

However, the Mavericks scored four unanswered goals to win the game. The game was actually tied at 2-2 going into the third period. But, the Mavericks scored a pair, one of which was a power play goal. MS-Mankato was 2 of 8 on the power play in the opening game.

In the second game, the Chargers carried a 2-1 lead into the final period, only to see it evaporate. Once again, MS-Mankato scored two third period goals to earn the come-from-behind win. That pain was compounded by the fact that UAH outshot the Mavericks 37-23 in the game.

Joel Bresciani put the Chargers on the board first with a power play goal at 3:27 in the first period. The Mavericks tied the game on a power play goal of their own at the 6:43 mark of the period.

In the second period, Ian Fletcher gave the Chargers a 2-1 lead on another power play. However, the Chargers melted down in the final period, giving up two goals.

The Chargers won't get the chance to redeem themselves for nearly three weeks. UAH doesn't play again until they host the SCI Holiday Shootout on December 29-30 at the Von Braun Center. The Chargers will play Canisius College at 7 p.m. on Friday night. In the first game on Friday, the University of Nebraska-Omaha will face the University of Massachutsetts-Lowell at 4 p.m. The tournament will continue on Saturday at 4 and 7 p.m.
