No. 25 Chargers drill Gaels on home ice
Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information
The Chargers swept their second straight series rolling past Iona College 4-0 and 4-2 at the Von Braun Center. The wins improved the UAH record to 7-1. The sweep has the Chargers riding a four game winning streak going into the series rematch against defending College Hockey America champion Niagara in two weeks.
In the series opener, Mark Byrne got his third shutout of the season behind 21 saves and a stifling Charger defense. Meanwhile, the Charger offense was powered by four power play goals. UAH was 4-of-7 on the power play, while the Charger penalty kill units blanked the Gaels on four tries.
Mike Funk had two goals for the Chargers, his first two of the season. He gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead going into the third period. Ron Baker and Dwayne Blais scored the other two goals in the final period.
Ian Fletcher had a pair of assists in the game. Karlis Zirnis, Darren Curry, Jessi Otis, Ryan McCormack and Gerald Overton each had one assist.
On Saturday, the Chargers rolled to a 4-0 lead, then held on for the win. Freshman netminder Adam MacLean got his first win as a Charger. He finished the game with 23 saves and had shutout through two periods.
Jason Hawes, Zirnis and McCormack scored even strength goals, while Blais scored a goal on a penalty shot.
Hawes' goal broke a scoreless tie at 8:46 in the second period. Joel Bresciani fed Zirnis for the Chargers' second goal of the game at 10:41 to give UAH a 2-0 lead.
Blais got the penalty shot opportunity after an Iona player was caught covering the puck in the crease. After fumbling the puck a bit, Blais put the eventual game-winner through the five hole, scoring the third goal of the period for the Chargers.
After McCormack added to the lead in the third period, the defense relaxed a bit and the Gaels scored a pair of goals. However, the damage was done.
The Chargers have the week off before hosting Niagara on November 17-18. Ironically, the two teams will turn right back around and play two more games in New York the following weekend. The four-game swing could put one of the teams in the driver's seat in the CHA standings.
