The Charger hockey team completed a perfect sweep of Bowling Green with a 2-0 whitewash on Saturday night. It is the first time in the history of the program that the Chargers have opened a season with back-to-back shut outs. It is also the first ever back-to-back blankings for sophomore netminder Mark Byrne.
On Saturday, Byrne had 26 saves, topping his 25 save performance in the season opener.
Both defenses were outstanding on the night. Bowling Green goalie Tyler Masters also had 25 saves in the game. However, 22 seconds into the third period, UAH found a hole in Masters' defense. Sophomore left wing Karlis Zirnis converted a Charger power play with a slapper over Masters' right shoulder. Darren Curry and Mike Funk were credited with assists on the play.
The Chargers put the game away with time ticking down as Steve Charlebois took advantage of the Falcon empty net. Charlebois fired a shot the length of the ice that hit dead center in the Bowling Green net with only 16 seconds left in the game.
The Chargers (2-0) are on the road next weekend at Western Michigan.
