Chargers blank Bowling Green in opener

Coach Doug Ross picked up his first win in seven tries against Bowling Green head coach Buddy Powers as the Chargers blanked the visiting Falcons 3-0.

Second-year goalie Mark Byrne had 25 saves in his second career shutout. Ryan McCormack scored a pair of goals to lead the Chargers. Karlis Zirnis scored the other goal for UAH. Tyler Butler and Ryan Leasa had two assists each, while Ron Baker and Jessi Otis had one.

After a scoreless first period, McCormack put the Chargers on the board with a power play goal at 9:48 in the second period. Then at 18:05, Zirnis knocked one home off of a rebound to put the Chargers up 2-0 with less than two minutes left in the period.

In the third period, McCormack put the nail in the coffin with a shorthanded goal at 10:19.

The Chargers penalty kill units did a spectacular job on the evening holding the Falcons to 0-8 on the power play.
