Chargers end skid with sweep of Wayne State

Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

Welcome back Chargers! Where have you been? The team that Charger fans are used to returned to the ice over the weekend. The Chargers stopped a 7-game losing streak by sweeping Wayne State 5-0 and 4-2 in a College Hockey America series in Fraser, MI.

In the opener, the Chargers earned their first shutout since blanking Iona earlier in the season. UAH netminder Mark Byrne only had to make 15 saves to earn the shutout. Meanwhile, on offense five different Chargers scored goals. Karlis Zirnis, Steve Charlebois, Ron Baker, Jessi Otis and Tyler Butler each scored goals in the Chargers' game one win.

The series opener was marred by a pile of penalties. The Chargers had 15 penalties for 33 minutes, while Wayne State had 16 penalties for 40 minutes. UAH converted two of the power play opportunities into goals. UAH also scored a pair of short-handed goals.

In the second game of the series, the Chargers jumped out to a two goal lead and this time, didn't let it get away. Ryan McCormack put the Chargers on the board in the first period with a power play goal. Then, later in the period Kevin Ridgeway scored to give UAH a 2-0 lead.

A power play goal by Wayne State cut the lead to 2-1 late in the opening period. However, a second period power play goal by Jessi Otis and a third period goal by Ian Fletcher put the game away for UAH.

Again, Byrne stood tall in the pipes for UAH with 28 saves.
