Chargers Extend Unbeaten Streak to Six Games….Byrne Sets UAH Record

Todd Watts, UAH Sports Information

The Chargers continued their unbeaten streak this weekend by sweeping the Air Force Academy 4-0 on Friday and 5-3 on Saturday. The unbeaten streak is now at six games and the Chargers have gone 5-0-1 during that span.

Mark Byrne also set the UAH record for most shutouts in a season on Friday. Byrne earned his fifth shutout of the season, passing former netminder Steve Briere. Byrne has six shutouts in his career and stands just one shy of tying the record for most shutouts in a career.

In Friday night's contest the Chargers dismantled the Falcons by scoring just about every type of goal possible. The Chargers opened scoring with an even strength goal at 11:06 in the first by Steve Charlebois. This goal would turn out to be the game winner and set the tone for Charlebois' weekend.

It wasn't until the second period that the Chargers would score again. At 13:20 in the second, Karlis Zirnis tapped in an insurance marker put the Chargers up 2-0. By the end of the second period, Air Force would have failed to connect on three power-play opportunities and were being out-shot 22-18.

In the third period, the Chargers put the game out of reach with two more goals. At 7:33 in the third, the Chargers leading points man Darren Curry scored a power-play goal to make the score 3-0. Then at 15:48, Charlebois made his presence felt yet again by scoring a shorthanded goal to complete the destruction of the Falcons.

While the Chargers special teams were phenomenal on Friday, Air Force failed to convert on seven power-play opportunities. The biggest back breaker for the Falcons came at the end of the third period when they failed to convert on close to two minutes of 5 on 3. Then, a delay penalty on Curry allowed the Air Force goalie to come off the ice in favor of the extra attacker. This generated almost 30 seconds of 6 on 3 hockey for Air Force and they still were unable to convert.

When the two teams played again on Saturday night, a large crowd of 3,646 fans packed the Von Braun Center. It was the largest crowd of the season thusfar for the Chargers. At first the it seemed like the Chargers' chances of extending their unbeaten streak and sweeping Air Force were doomed. The Chargers fell behind by two goals, before waking up.

Brian Rodgers power-play goal at 11:12 of the first put the Falcons on the board. Then, Air Force scored again at 4:33 in the second when Scott Zwiers scored his 12th goal of the season. He fired a shot just under the cross-bar in the left corner of the net and over a sprawling Byrne.

In the second period, the Chargers opened fire with the heavy guns. The first UAH goal came at 13:53. Dwayne Blais scored a power-play goal to get the boys in blue and white back in the game at 2-1. It was very evident that even though the Chargers were still down by a goal, they were fired up.

It took just two minutes and nineteen seconds for the Chargers to even the score at 2-all. Jessi Otis scored his 8th goal of the season when he appeared to bank the shot off of the Air Force goalie at 15:12 in the third.

Thirty-three seconds later the Chargers took the lead from Air Force on a goal from Charlebois. A little over three minutes later, Joel Bresciani scored what would turn out to be the game-winner at 19:02 in the second period to cap off the Chargers incredible 4-goal run in the second.

In the third period the Chargers extended their lead to 5-2 as Charlebois scored his second goal of the game and fourth of the series. Air Force's Justin Hamilton scored a goal with 30 seconds left to cut the Charger lead to 5-3. However, there simply wasn't enough time left in the game for Air Force to do any significant damage.

The Charger penalty-kill units were nearly invincible over the weekend. They combined to smash 14 of 15 Falcon power plays in the series. The Chargers outshot the Falcons 58 to 25 on Friday night. The Chargers went 1 for 6 on the power-play and 2 of 9 on the weekend.
