Niagara University, NY (January 15, 2001) - Charger goaltender Mark Byrne was named CHA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Byrne, a 5-10, 170-pound sophomore from Nepean, Ont., helped to lead the Chargers to three of a possible four points from the University of Findlay over the weekend.
On Friday night, Byrne made 15 saves, allowing only one goal. On Saturday night, he made 13 saves. For the weekend he had 28 saves for a .966 save percentage and a 0.59 goals-against average. For the season, he is 10-6-1 with a 2.34 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.
Behind Byrne and backup goalie Adam MacLean, the Chargers have gone unbeaten over the last four games since suffering through a 7-game losing streak. That coupled with Wayne State's shocking sweep of Niagara on the Eagles' home ice has UAH tied for the top spot in the CHA.
The race has tightened up in the Conference after the weekend's action. UAH and Niagara are deadlocked at the top of the heap with 13 points apiece, while the Chargers upcoming opponent, Air Force, is just a point behind with 12 points.
Findlay fell to fourth after their trip to Huntsville with 10 points. Following their improbable sweeep at Niagara, Wayne State is in fifth place, but only four points away from the leaders with nine points. The only team seemingly out of the running for now is Bemidji State, who is trailing the pack in sixth place with three points.
Next Series: vs. Air Force at the Von Braun Center on January 19-20...Faceoff on both days is 7:05 p.m. The series will be broadcast live on the Internet via www.liveonthenet.com.
