BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After emerging as one of the top
offensive threats for the Alabama-Huntsville baseball team this
season, freshman third baseman Jordan Parker
(Hartselle) has earned
Gulf South Conference East Division Freshman of the Year honors as
voted on by the league's coaches and announced by the league on Thursday.
Parker Forced to sit out the 2007 season with
an injury, Parker redshirted after earning 2006 Decatur Daily
Large School Player of the Year
honors as a senior at Hartselle High School. Parker picked up where
he left off leading UAH with a .347 average at the dish as well as
finishing tops on the team in total bases (78), slugging percentage
(.467) and hits (58).
Parker's
selection makes it the second-straight year that a Charger has picked
up GSC East Division Freshman of the Year honors after sophomore Nick Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.) earned the award in 2007. It marks the
fifth time that a Charger has won the award since the program began
in 1996.
