Outreach
The Outreach Program is a unique way to acquire funds for programs, conferences, and seminars that promote the understanding, education, development, and utilization of space, that encourage interdisciplinary training and research in aerospace-related fields, and that train professionals for careers in aerospace science, technology, and allied fields. This includes External Relations Programs, General Public events, K-12 Education programs, Research Experience for Undergraduates, and Joint University Research program.
A major goal of the ASGC has been to build upon the effective space research infrastructure that is a distinctive characteristic of North Alabama and to expand it throughout the state. ASGC research infrastructure projects include support for student-designed and built experiments such as the KC-135 microgravity program, the consortium's EPSCoR program, a Joint University-Industry Research Program (JUIRP) designed to spur high-tech industry by encouraging businesses to work with the state's research universities, and a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. These programs contribute directly to NASA's workforce development initiative.
GTA Support of High School Science
Support for graduate student assistance in high school science classes (emphasis on biology and microgravity) for mentoring and lesson preparation in classroom and labs and to assist with special projects (i.e. rocket launches, protein crystallization). Student mentors are in the graduate science education program and are assigned to assist with classes in schools with significant minority populations in Huntsville and Madison County. The student stipend is matched by the university with tuition payment for the academic year. High school students also come to UAH for a day to view facilities and do laboratory experiments.
GLOBE Training for Cooperative Extension Service (County Extension Agents)
The Cooperative Extension service secured funding from ASGC to provide training to Extension workers in recognition of a need to provide innovative learning environments to help youth gain a greater awareness of the importance of science and technology and to learn to deal with environmental problems in the 21st century. A three-day GLOBE training featuring the atmosphere, soils, and water units is provided to extension agents in 11 counties. Each participant receives an educational kit containing lesson plans and equipment. These trainings have the potential to reach several thousand young people across the state. Additional training sessions are also held for the Environmental Education staff at the Alabama 4-H Centers with the potential for reaching young persons at 4-H camps during the summer.
Space Shuttle GAS Experiment
The ASGC provided funding for the power supply system, necessary for operation and control of experiments, on Get-Away-Special Canister 503. These experiments were performed by students at UAH and UAB. Support for the experiments came from UAH, UAB, the ASGC, Master Builders of Cleveland, Ohio, and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Results on the microstructure of concrete cured in microgravity were obtained. xperimental results were presented at a Shuttle Small Payloads Conference. The ASGC has reserved another GAS-Can for future cooperative experiments.
