NASA EPSCoR

The Alabama NASA EPSCoR program has two components:

1) a full research program, competitively selected in a field of interest to both NASA and the State of Alabama. We have only one such program, directed by Dr Michael George of the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), entitled "Microcantilever Arrays for Chemical and Biological Sensing". Details are given below.

2) "Infrastructure Development", and includes a) seed grants to investigators in early stages of development of their Space Science and Aerospace Technology research programs, b) grants which support undergraduate and graduate student working visits to NASA field centers, and c) partial support of workshops and conferences held at Alabama member universities in areas of direct interest to NASA. Our participation facilitates more involvement by our students in the work of the conference, giving them a chance to hear discussions of international research work in progress and to meet the scientists and engineers involved.

Abstract:

The program partially supports two postdoctoral scientists and several research students. At the end of the second year of the program, one student has just graduated with a Masters degree (by thesis), one publication has been accepted and several are in preparation.

Student Internships at NASA Centers

With a combination of resources including the Alabama NASA EPSCOR, the NASA Summer Faculty Program, the MSFC Education Office and the Alabama Space Grant Consortium, we have designed a program for 5 Alabama A&M students to undertake a new program to design and build a rocket during the summer of 2003. Technical mentoring is provided by Marshall engineers and the program is directed by Dr. Razi Hassan of AAMU. Alabama Space Grant Consortium Home Page
